Aborigines
Aboriginals are indigenous Australians whose descendants were the first inhabitants of the Australian continent and nearby islands such as Torres Strait Islands. Together they constitute less than 3% of Australia’s population and comprise countless indigenous communities with different languages and traditions.
They are also defined by geographical regions and examples of these groups are Koori, Murri, Noongar, Yapa.
Aboriginals are Australia's earliest inhabitants and may even be the world's first people dating back some 47 000 years. During the last Ice Age (over 30 000 - up to 2 million years ago)
Australia was joined to New Guinea while Indonesian land masses were larger with smaller water distances between them allowing for sea voyages in small simple craft. It is still not known exactly where the Aboriginals originated from but as the ice melted and the oceans rose, Australia and eventually Tasmania became isolated. They adapted well to their new homeland and it is their tremendous affinity to the land and surroundings that explains how they have survived for so many millennia. The land lies at the essence of their spiritual beliefs and is not perceived as soil and rocks. Their tradition of passing down to each new generation their knowledge, rituals, languages etc has enabled their cultural heritage to live on. All Aboriginals (or Kooris) lived in clans with their own dialects and territories.
